Have you ever wondered how sites like Tumblr get away with displaying copyrighted images? Now, we might shed some light on this issue. Now one of the Internet’s biggest players in the porn industry is going after Tumblr for copyright infringement.
Adult publisher Perfect 10 is suing microblogging service and social network Tumblr for $5 million for “rampant and unremedied uploading, display and distribution of Perfect 10′s copyrighted photographs.”
In the official complaint, Perfect 10 states that Tumblr’s reblogging function allows “subscribers to copy and distribute infringing content at the touch of a button.”
The official complaint also states Perfect 10 sent former Tumblr president John Maloney six Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) email notices to take down the over 200 images. As of the date of the complaint filing, Tumblr had removed “at most only a handful.”
This move is a direct attack against Tumblr’s biggest defense against infringement laws, “safe harbor laws,” which states that users — not hosts such as Tumblr — are responsible for copyright violations.
According to the Perfect 10, “Tumblr should be held liable for its failure to abide by its obligations under the DMCA and for willfully ignoring the widespread and uncontrolled copyright infringement pervading its website.”
In light of the controversy regarding the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), some have argued that it was just a matter of time that Tumblr be held liable for copyright violations.
Tumblr is not the only website that Perfect 10 has blacklisted. In the past, the company has also sued several companies for the alleged misuse of its images, including Google, Microsoft and Amazon.
In the event that Perfect 10 wins this lawsuit against Tumblr, it could have a ripple effect with other sites. With its “re-pinning,” function Pinterest, for example, might be left susceptible to a copyright lawsuit.

I would think with a social network like this, that it’s the users at fault, not the free service they are using. I guess Perfect 10 thinks it will squeeze more juice out of Tumblr than it will some of its users.
If you are doing this for a hobby I would definitely go with Google blggoer.com. They are really great and later on you can export the whole blog into a serious website later.I do not like the free blog at WordPress.com as they have restrictions on what content you can put on there. They are very strict on advertising and other stuff.If you want to make a blogging business, for example building websites to earn money online, I would suggest you buy Web hosting and install WordPress. This is not the same as the free WordPress I mentioned above as you can do what ever you want with it.I teach people how to build their own WordPress website and make money online from it.
